The Nicholas Club

As Nicholas has been taking a few flying leaps off steps lately, resulting in some damage to his nose that have prompted several inquiries from friends -- "What happened to his nose?" ... which has kept Kelli busy explaining what did happen ... well, we'll see if I join the Nicholas Nose club this weekend or not.

This morning while helping Lou sort pigs for the days' sales, I misjudged where my foot was (it was supposed to stop the gate from opening) and the gate to the scale flew open when several pigs ran into it, hitting me square on the nose. I had my glasses on so fortunately it missed both lenses, (thus the direct hit), and I must have ducked my face a little bit because it hit mostly just below the bridge of the nose, not the end, not my chin or mouth and not my head. Hurt like heck and brought tears to my eyes immediately; I was able to finish helping with that little batch of pigs but after a few minutes began to feel woosy and nauseous, so I decided to sit it out in the scale house, using a package of breakfast sausage from the freezer on my nose until it felt better while Lou and the truck driver, Buzz, finished loading the pigs.

Not much swelling, really, so I am not sure if it's broken at all or just banged up.
It did crunch a bit when the gate hit ... but no bleeding that I noticed either. I am not sure whether or not there will be significant noticeable bruising in the coming days, but it still hurts tonight a fair amount; I have been icing it off and on today. So it remains to be seen if people will look at me in the coming days and ask "What happened to your nose?!" ... if I wind up with two black eyes, I will post a picture. In the meantime, where is my baggie of frozen peas?

  1. Ouch! Your description of where it hit makes it sound like it was a direct hit to your Vomer (one of the unpaired bones of the skull/face). This bone is the subject of some discussion as to whether a direct hit to it can kill a person. If you look at its placement in the skull, and when it is disarticulated from the other bones that it adjoins, it appears as if a direct hit would force it back into the brain like a knife, with deadly consequences. But, despite being told that a direct hit could kill, when I looked for info online about that today, all I found was that it hasn't been officially heard of by anybody--and you'd expect boxer's to be keeling over right and left from a well-placed punch. And, obviously, if it was a direct hit, it didn't kill you.
Anyway, it bet it does hurt. I wouldn't be surprised if you end up with double black eyes, or a persistent runny nose, or anything weird like that. Ouch!

  2. We learned about that bone in biology in college, too, and they also said that it could kill. Interesting that it appears to be all a theory, though, without any real cases documented (that you could find). I will definitely live.
