Bummed out

Not having a good day here ...

1. Lou informed me at 4 AM this morning that the carpet was wet on his side of the bed (which is the wall side, that wall being mostly underground on our split-level house). I woke up enough to remember that the yard sprinkler was on connected to the faucet just outside that wall, so it must have leaked in through or under the wall, which only happens if water is directly streaming down the outside of the house, something I have avoided doing since I found that out several years ago.) So I got up and went out to turn off the sprinkler and found that, indeed, the faucet quick-connect connector was spraying quite a bit of water directly onto the side of the house...

So today I got to remove all the junk from the floor in that room (a long overdue task but still ...) and pull the carpet up as much as I could and try to sop up the water with towels. That being too slow, I had Kelli come over with her steam cleaner and suck the water out of the carpet. Very efficient. It's not a huge area, maybe 3x5, but it was WET and the pad underneath it too. Then I rented a big floor blower fan and am getting it dried out that way. Warm day out so with both windows open I am hopeful it will be all dry soon. Now hoping there won't be a *mold* problem showing up in that wall ... I guess we'll know when Lou becomes deathly ill, as he is allergic to mold ...

2. My computer email program is not working. Without all the boring details (which I don't even much know how to explain anyway), just say that I can't get into my email program, Thunderbird, as of today. I can still check and send emails (if I have or know the address) via the Google web client or whatever they call it, but all my addresses are in Thunderbird, as are all my templates for church weekly newsletters, etc. Lou never has been able to figure out how to read emails on the Google mail site, and I don't like it either, so we did what was necessary to have the Google client send our emails to us via Thunderbird after they changed over to that system last fall. For whatever reason it has refused to send them to the Thunderbird program for over a week now, after doing something weird on May 8 (sending us a 5-year old email three times instead of the one we were supposed to get from the senders). In trying to fix that, I seem to have made it worse ... what else is new? I know just enough about computers to be *really dangerous* sometimes. I have a distress call/email in to Shane ...
[update: fixed! Found an online forum that said to disable the camera, then the upgrade will install... I did, it did, and all is working as far as I can tell. Whew.]

3. The air conditioner in the house isn't working. It did this last year and Don came and fiddled with it a bit and it worked OK for the rest of the summer. I don't really need the a/c today, although it is one of the warmest days so far this year at over 80 degrees, but I thought I'd fire up the a/c just to be sure it worked. Well, it didn't. It just turned the little red light on, like it thinks it is supposed to be working, but no fan comes on to blow it around (if it is actually cooling at the unit). I suppose I will call Don again ...

4. A left-over problem from last month, but somewhat related: the car a/c isn't working either, as part of whatever happened on the way home from the west side while driving in the rain, when the rear wiper decided not to work anymore and the BRAKE and ABS lights came on on the dash. I took it to the dealer shop on Friday to see if it was a simple thing (an online page mentioned a certain fuse) but he checked that fuse and it is fine. The others seemed fine too. So it is something more complex, but electrically related, since the a/c, the rear wiper, the dash fan and the interior lights all do not work the way they used to (and should).

So it seems my things are all falling apart.
Now I need to figure out how to get them fixed...

  1. That's definitely all a bummer, although good to hear you got your email back up and running! Will you have to keep your camera disabled forever, or just when downloading that stuff?

  2. HI, Debbie!! Sorry I've been out of touch for so long - especially when you uploaded those pictures of the wedding just for me :)) Thanks for doing that - I love them! It looks like it was a lovely day - and the family picture is awesome. Those are always so precious because it's so hard to get everyone together when they are scattered all over.

I hope you got the water problem aftermath dried out. I hate water in the basement more than anything else, I think! It makes such a mess, especially when you have stuff all over, like I do!

We are so, so dry up here but still getting frost at night! It snowed in Calgary on Saturday night, which is about the latest snow I've heard of in a long time. Some guys are still seeding for silage but the grain people are spraying now, wherever the canola's not frozen and there's actually something up. The rain has been spotty so closer to Leduc they've got decent crops. I still have some garden seedlings to set out and then we are going camping with 2 of our girls on the weekend. I'm going to Nova Scotia to see Samuel (our new on May 13th grandson) and his mom, Melinda next week. Tyler has returned to NYC where he's doing a clerkship in pediatrics for the next 6 weeks. Mel hopes to join him by the end of the month.

I'm looking forward to your next entry :))
