Fizzled Fourth

The 4th of July was a little under celebrated at our house this year. It falling on a Sunday, I sort of wished they had planned festivities for Saturday or Monday. The weather was fine but the wind picked up in the afternoon and I wondered how that would affect the fireworks display they put up over the lake from the downtown park in Moses Lake. While we were waiting for "dusk" (what time is that anyway?) to happen, I read a comment from Ben on Facebook that the display had been canceled due to the windy conditions. I couldn't confirm that report anywhere online or by phone (the Park n Rec office had their normal recording playing) but it made sense, particularly in light of the wildfire that was sparked earlier that afternoon. Seems someone set off fireworks during the period of most brisk winds and lit the adjoining grass/sagebrush field on fire. About 1400 acres burned, they reported, one house and a few outbuildings. They were ready to evacuate up to 50 homes. Lou had gone to bed for a nap before fireworks, so I didn't wake him up, and we didn't go into town. We think they probably did the display after all, but maybe 1/2 hour late. I don't think very many heard the radio report that Ben had earlier that evening, so they were sort of stuck with the crowd waiting for something to happen.

I watched parts of the New York display on TV. Boy, they do quite the show, with 6 identical displays all going of simultaneously from boats parked in the river, choreographed to music. It would have been spectacular in person. On TV it was even sort of fascinating.

Thea is now two years old, "born on the 4th of July." We will cram a little birthday celebration for her in somewhere between Thursday and Sunday ...

Last evening was a beautiful, calm night -- no winds at all. Would have been a nice night for fireworks ;o)
