As is true of all our grandchildren, he is a smart little kid, very active and independent. What Rachel always says about Ruston is true --
1) if there is camera pointed his way, he will smile for it, and
2) he's a climber -- ie, the only way to get onto the fouton couch is over the side of the arm, and he has his own cabinet in the kitchen to play in. We had a good time getting to know him and it didn't take long for him to warm up to us.
Field trip: Lou had visited a few on a roadtrip while in college, but I had not been to any Civil War battlefields before. We went to the Stones River battlefield at Murfreesboro, where a battle occurred over New year's of 1862 and into 1863. Being there reminds you how small these battlefield areas were and just how hand-to-hand and face-to-face the combat must have been.
Ruston enjoyed the visitor center and walking outside -- on his own, thank you, refusing assistance or being carried -- around the grounds, even if there was a lot of opportunity for tripping over stones just under the surface. As you can see, Stoney is the right name for the place. Not sure how those stone formations happened, but they are big and just under the surface, except for in this one area where they are exposed.
I should have handed the camera to Rachel and got a shot of Lou and me here with Ruston, but as usual, I am behind the camera on these pictures.
It was a good visit, and we hope all three of them can make it this way sometime this next summer.
(In general, stopping for a photo op was not Ruston's thing on this day, but I managed to get him in this one anyway. Zip, there he goes!)

Yeah! You came back to blogging. I was a bit afraid that maybe you'd abandoned it or were too busy now. How is school going for Lou? Your grandkids are growing so fast too. It really is amazing how quickly they become independent and busy with learning stuff at home and in other places. Happy New Year - we hope it is a good growing year and that God's blessings abound!
